Rais wa Marekani Barack Obama anaahidi kutumia uwezo wake wote kuzuia maafa kama yaliyotokea Ijumaa ya mauaji ya wanafunzi 20 na watu wazima sita kwenye shule moja ya msingi katika mji wa Newtown, huku wakazi wa eneo hilo wanajiandaa kwa mazishi ya kwanza kufanyika ya waathirika wa tukio hilo.

Alielezea kwamba hii ilikuwa mara ya nne katika tukio la ufyatuaji risasi holela lililohusisha umati wa watu ambalo limetokea tangu alipoingia madarakani takribani miaka minne iliyopita.

“Hatuwezi kuvumilia jambo kama hili tena. Maafa haya lazima yakomeshwe na kukomesha hili lazima tufanye mabadiliko. Tutaambiwa kuwa chanzo cha ghasia aina hii hazielezeki kwa urahisi na hilo ni kweli. Hakuna sheria, hakuna sheria inayoweza kutokomeza majanga duniani na kuzuia kila hatua ya ghasia kutokea katika jamii yetu. Lakini hilo haliwezi kuwa kisingizo cha kutokuchukua hatua”.

Awali Rais alikutana kwa faragha na familia za watu waliopoteza wapendwa wao katika tukio lililotokea kwenye shule ya msingi ya Sandy Hook na kuwashukuru waokozi waliojitokeza kutoa msaada katika maafa hayo.
